Cab Driver Nabbed During Robbery Operation In Edo
One Monday David, 38-year-old who is suspected to be a armed robber has been arrested by men of the Edo state police command.
He was was arrested at the crime scene in Benin city.
The suspect, Monday David, is alleged to belong to a three-person armed robbery gang terrorising Ikpoba Hill and environs in Benin city.
According to reports the gang specialise in attacking and robbing Point of sales outlets (POS) in Benin city.
According to Standard Gazette crime correspondent Festus Alenkhe gathered that the suspect and two others now at large had used an Audi 80 car to allegedly robbed several Point of sales outlets in Ikpoba Hill and environs.
The suspect had allegedly approached an operator of a POS shop at the Benin Bypass and pretended to be a genuine customer.
It was gathered that he requested to withdraw the sum of N200,000 from the operator.
During the purported transaction, David signalled his cohorts which were on standby to strike.
The suspects robbed the operator and carted away her phones.
But some residents who witnessed the robbery operation raised the alarm, attracting some members of the vigilantes who were closed by who gave them a hot pursuit.
David was apprehended while his gang members escaped.
In an interview David said, “I am a cabman. My sister bought the Audi 80 car for me.
“Two of my friends that escaped are my customers.
They asked me to go with them to ikpoba Hill in Benin for armed robbery. I never knew they will catch me.
“I really don’t know the area so well and that was why I was not able to escape. I am from Benin here. I have brought disgrace to my friends and family”.
Edo State Police Public Relations officer SP Bello Kontongs said the police has mapped out a strategy to arrest the fleeing members of the gang.
According to him, “This suspect will be charged to court for armed robbery”.
